Q: What should I expect in my first session?
A: Your first session will be a consultation to discuss your fitness history and goals. We will discuss your limitations (previous injuries) and fitness strengths. You will learn about our methodology, class structure, and approach to functional fitness while having the opportunity to observe a class and our welcoming community!
Q: What is a WOD?
A: WOD, or Workout of the Day, is the list of exercises for a given day. With CrossFit being constantly varied, everyone is always anticipating what tomorrow’s WOD will be.
Q: What does scale-able mean?
A: It means we can and will adapt or "scale" the workout to suit your level of fitness and ability.
Q: What types of movements/exercises will I be doing? What type of equipment is used?
A: You will learn foundational functional movements in addition to bodyweight exercises and weight training. The bodyweight movements include push ups, squats, burpees, and pull-ups. We also use kettle bells, barbells, weights, bands, sandbags, rings, rowers, air dynes, medicine balls, dumbbells, jump ropes, and more.
Q: What can I expect from a typical CrossFit class?
A: Classes are 60 minutes with about 10 minutes of group stretch/warm-up, generally followed by a skill/strength portion lasting about 10-20 minutes, a WOD (workout of the day) which is a workout using the skill and lifts, and finally a cool down. Additionally, you can always come in during other class times and use our warm-up area to stretch on your own and/or practice skills, if there is not a Fundamentals class taking place.
Q: Can I come in and work out on my own when there isn't a class time? Do I need to go to a scheduled class time?
A: No. Yes. Reason being: We want you to be the best you can be in a safe, community based environment.
Q: Do I really need shoes like I see everyone else wearing?
A: No, you do not need to get special shoes for CrossFit. Specialized footwear definitely helps but it is not 100% necessary.
Q: Why should I try CrossFit? I am disciplined and can work hard on my own for less cost.
A: Ask some of our members! We think they will tell you something like this... The class environment with a coach will motivate you to do your best in ways that are unparalleled to working out on your own.
Q: I have never used free weights to workout before. Is that an issue?
A: Nope, not an issue at all! At Portage CrossFit Cooperative, we require a four class Fundamentals course for beginners. After Fundamentals, individuals of all levels participate in a supportive, community setting.
Q: Will I get bulky?
A: You will see a transformation in your body, but in most cases the transformation will be one of toning and definition.
